Warez P2P was originally developed this time last year by Alberto at the request of Warez.com. Alberto, the Ares Galaxy developer, was asked to produce a version of Ares with an advertisement banner.
Since then, Warez has become a project in its own right, but has yet to shake the “Ares with adware” image. | |
To avoid Internet browser adware, file sharers planning to use this software should not install "New.net" or "Search Enhancements" during installation. If they are mistakenly installed, they can be removed using Add/Remove Programs.
1) Why was the Warez P2P project started?
Warez P2P was started to create a stable, decentralized P2P communications network. We have formed a full development team to explore the possibilities of P2P technology far beyond chatting and file sharing.
2) Why did you choose to latch onto the Ares Galaxy network?
Warez P2P chose to use the Ares network because it was decentralized, stable and was not already filled with corrupt files. Warez joined the network in January when the network was under 50,000 users. The network has proven its reliability through its quick growth and at peak stands at 1.7m users online.
3) How was this growth achieved?
We were able to market Warez P2P across our network of high traffic sites and partner sites such as Warez.com. We use “Warez” for its recognition and marketability. Since the start of the Internet boom, "warez" has been one of the top terms searched for on search engines. In the early 80's, the word "warez" became the slang term for trading software among others via online bulletin board sites, the precursor to the Internet. Today "warez" is the underground term for all the software, music, movies, and documents posted on websites or traded through peer-to-peer networks. Like the term “MP3”, we have moved “warez” into the mainstream and redefined it as “Shared information over a digital network”
4) What percentage of these users has Warez P2P as their client of choice?
Currently, we estimate that the network is split 50/50 between Warez and Ares users.
5) Warez is often referred to as “Ares with Adware.” Why should users choose Warez over Ares?
Some Warez users have also installed Ares because they found Ares to not have an ad banner, however both programs have optional adware (none of which is particularly threatening). Since Warez version 2.3, Warez has added features and code that has increased stability and performance over Ares and previous versions of Warez. The new Warez 2.5 is our most advanced update so far, with many new features and meticulous bug fixing.
6) Adware can also mean banner adverts. What does Warez offer extra which will encourage users to tolerate these?
Our minimal advertising is needed to pay for the evolution of the technology. Over the next few versions of Warez, users will benefit from the more added features that are in development. The new Warez v2.5 now has a CD ripping plug-in, a revised scanning feature, some new GUI features, and a modified download algorithm for faster downloading, to name but a few. We also provide support for problems associated with Windows XP SP2, and pride ourselves in being the first file-sharing program to address this issue.
7) Is the Warez team concerned about the increasing number of fakes being brought to the network by Fasttrack refugees and elsewhere?
Yes, a clean network is one of our primary concerns. Our next generation network will include even more file algorithms and name tagging utilities to ensure file integrity.
8) Despite its size, the Ares/Warez network has so far avoided legal attention. Why do you believe it has been ignored? Will it last?
We believe Warez P2P is definitely being watched since it is the 2nd or 3rd biggest decentralized network in the world. However, since the Grokster decision was upheld in US court, the RIAA and MPAA may be waiting to find a new attack angle. Until there is a war on P2P technology itself, Warez P2P will continue to be a legal search and communications tool.
9) Individuals using the Ares/Warez network have also seen suspiciously little legal attention. Why do you believe this is? Will this last?
The network hasn’t gained big attention by the mainstream press, so the entertainment industry may feel targeting a few individuals may not be effective if it’s not widely covered by the media. Or perhaps they have the strategy of not wanting to bring attention to a new P2P network and increase press coverage which brings new users. In any case, we will continue to implement stronger privacy features to protect users.
10) Warez currently have Warez P2P 3.0 in development. What plans does Warez have for this release?
Warez 3.0 will introduce our next generation network. This network will allow advanced searching, encryption, and solid privacy features. The new network technology will allow us to offer exciting P2P applications that will finally show how P2P technology goes way beyond sharing music files.
11) What can you tell me about the rumored anonymity features and BitTorrent speed downloads?
Anonymity is obviously the most highly demanded feature in P2P. We will combine IP blocking along with innovative cloaking techniques to protect the user.
Warez 3.0 will include BitTorrent downloading. Yes, decentralized BitTorrent. We have been working with BitTorrent technology for a while now, and soon we will combine the best of both worlds. Similar to SuprNova’s recently announced network “Exeem”, users will search for torrent files within the Warez P2P network instead of a web site. Tracking is handled within the client itself.
12) Are you not making these claims prematurely?
No. The coding for these features has been in development for a long time. We will introduce these features with our next generation network.
13) By adding additional functions, such as the CD ripper and burner, are you running the risk of the software becoming bloated?
Not at all… Warez P2P will continue to only include its core communication features in the initial install package, with big extras being optional on installation. It’s important also to note that the way the program has been written allows for stand-alone modules to be initiated by buttons inside Warez. This means they don’t even get loaded into memory until the user decides to do so, thus maintaining the speed of our program.
14) Will users have the choice of functions to download and install?
Yes, additional features will be downloaded and installed as optional plug-ins.
15) Can Warez achieve its goals, whilst keeping the simplicity the users love so much?
We are focusing on building a P2P community that is simple to explore, yet is powerful and able to grow as new optional P2P applications are introduced. We will continue to keep our GUI interface user friendly, and our programmers will continue to design at the lowest level of coding to ensure future platform portability.
16) Where is the revenue going to come from?
Revenue will come from subtle, non-obtrusive advertising.
17) There is lots of mistrust for those who attempt to profit from P2P. What makes Warez different?
Warez P2P has put together a highly talented business and programming team, and most of the advertisement revenue is reinvested into the engineering of P2P technology. When Class-A advertisers start accepting P2P clients as a legitimate marketing medium, much more income will be generated for development of the technology and possible distribution to content creators.
18) Since Warez P2P aides software piracy, is it acceptable for the community to pirate the pay version of Warez P2P?
We do not currently offer a pay version of Warez P2P. If someone is selling Warez P2P, it’s illegal. We also don’t support software piracy. If someone initiates transfer of a copyrighted work, we hope it is only to try the software on their system to help decide if they should purchase it.
19) A look at the Warez website shows that the project is about piracy, rather than developing P2P as a technology.
This notion is withheld under false pretence, mostly because of the slang meaning of the word “Warez”. Actually, Warez.com is about searching for any and all information via the web and P2P. We do not track what our users trade or download. Over the next couple of months, our site will also focus on independent content development and upcoming P2P applications.
20) Will Warez P2P be used to legally distribute copyrighted media in the future?
This is definitely a goal. We are working with representatives of well-known artists that are not controlled by big labels to distribute their content via P2P. Also, we are open to discussions with the big labels to show them the money that can be made from our massive audience via micro-payments and perhaps not charging the user at all. We feel we have the answers and are excited about meeting with musician coalitions and the big record labels to propose the solutions. Until then, we are ready to work directly with artists.
21) How will Warez support independent artists and software developers?
We are in the process of implementing an independent submission system which will eliminate distribution costs and the need to be tied to a record label. P2P users will be able to rate artists and their works. Warez P2P will display ratings charts and introduce channels dedicated to popular independent works in various categories. We also have a plan to directly distribute income to popular artists.
22) This sounds like DRM will be used. How do you plan to sell the idea of DRM to an audience that has so far shown a loathing for it?
We don’t agree with DRM standards and have no plans to implement DRM.
23) What is the alternative?
We support the Creative Commons Copyright system. We believe in artist control of how their work is distributed and marketed.
24) It sounds like you will be helping those artists who do want to work with you. However, there will be many others who do not want to use Warez P2P as a distribution channel. Is it right that you will also profit from these artists?
We will never track any individual songs or movies that are not in our upcoming artist submission system to target toward advertisers. Any copyrighted media that is traded over the network is a factor of what is shared by its community. Since record labels are known not to compensate most artists fairly for their CD or digital download sales, it has been argued that P2P networks help artists by enhancing worldwide recognition and reaching unexpected demographics. This leads to direct income for the artists via increased concert revenue and extra merchandise sales (T-shirts, live recordings, etc) which the labels traditionally don’t have complete control. The vast amount of independent artists in the world praise P2P technology for finally giving them a worldwide audience and economical solution for distributing their works.
25) When is the release date for Warez P2P V3.0?
Mid-2005 is our goal.
26) Are there plans for anymore V2.x releases?
Yes, there will be several 2.x releases over the next 2 months that will introduce many great features and increase performance generally
Warez P2P 2.5 is being released in conjunction with this interview. It includes the following major changes:
• A Windows XP SP2 patch. For those having crashing or connection problems with Warez or Ares in the past after installing service pack 2, downloading Warez P2P 2.5 should help.
• A graphical rework. The application is now XP aware, and can use several graphical themes.
• A new MSN-style notification window with sound when a new file arrives.
• An IP-ban system to filter unwanted eyes. Banned IP database stays automatically updated.
• A new plug-in system for optional features. Our first plug-in is WarezRip, a CD track extractor to build your library quickly and easily.
• Enhanced network connectivity, increased transfer speeds, and fixed various minor bugs.
27) Where do you see file sharing next year? What about 5 or 10 years? What role will Warez P2P be playing?
Next year - File sharing will increase, music and movie sales will still not be affected, and those industries will still be confused. Over the next 5 to 10 years, amazing P2P applications will develop that will make everyone realize the power and importance of P2P technology. Free P2P clients are here to stay. The fact that P2P communication bypasses the monitoring and control by commercial institutions or dictator governments is the true reason why P2P has become so popular. This audience of millions will guarantee P2P will be a success and accepted by all. We plan to advance encryption and privacy methods to ensure that people will be comfortable with how they communicate and share data in a peer-to-peer network. If the Internet was a revolution, P2P will be its evolution.
28) And finally, what is your favorite BitTorrent client?
